Abstract
The objectives of this work were: (i) to determine the ability to induce emesis of various hormones and putative neurotransmitter substances previously implicated in the regulation of gastric emptying or related autonomic functions; (ii) to determine the basic afferent-efferent characteristics of the reflex arc which may mediate vomiting through the dorsolateral reticular formation, and to assess the extent to which these can be modified by chemical activation of the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) in the area postrema (AP); (iii) in acute experiments in beagle dogs, to determine the effects on first-stage (800 rad whole-body irradiation) radioemesis of AP lesions and other surgical interventions.
