A HIGH-RESOLUTION DISCRIMINATION SYSTEM FOR NEUTRON IDENTIFICATION AND THE RECOGNITION OF CERENKOV EVENTS

Abstract
A high-resolution crossover timing system, comprising a constant-fraction of pulse height pulse shaper and a pulse-shape discriminator, is described. The system was designed for neutron identification and employs a stilbene scintillator in conjunction with an RCA 8575 photomultiplier. Recognition of Cerenkov events produced by Compton electrons in the glass window of a photomultiplier is shown to be possible. The practical importance of the recognition of such non-scintillation events to gamma spectroscopy is discussed.
