Abstract
Experience working with large amounts and numerous types of scientific data has dictated that a means to describe these data be standardized. Such a means, in the form of a data descriptor block standard, has been designed at DREA. This report documents this standard presently consisting of time series, Fourier transforms and frequency spectrum level data types. This standard simplified the use and creation of files of these types of data. Although the standard is machine independent, software operating under RT-11, RSX-11 and VAX/VMS operating systems is available to encode and decode these three data descriptor blocks. As more data types are required an applicable standard to adequately describe them will be added to this report.
