DOCUMENTING, REORGANIZING, AND ASSESSING DREA SOFTWARE FOR ANALYSIS OF NON-ACOUSTIC DATA

Abstract
Various non-acoustic data, including positional data, are collected at sea during DREA trials. A suite of programs which analyze these data has been developed by the Underwater Acoustics Section of DREA. The origin and system design philosophy of that suite of programs is described. For each program a User's Guide, where the program is described in terms of function performed, inputs, outputs, and a sample run, is provided. Typical analysis scenarios requiring a sequence of programs are described. The standard file format used by these programs to pass data from one to another is described, and the procedure for modifying it detailed. Other file formats used are also documented. Automated procedures for creating the programs and subroutine library are presented. The tasks involved in re-organizing the software prior to producing this documentation are described: source code was collected from two directories; duplicates and superseded versions removed; the subroutine library was consolidated and expanded. The overall quality of the software, including file and data types, was assessed, and a direction suggested for future development.
