Abstract
Toxins, which are non-replicating agents of biological origin, are relatively anonymous chemical agents even though many are among the most exquisitely lethal substances known. The paper categorizes toxins especially with respect to classical chemical and biological agents. Areas of potential use are discussed and examples of some identified toxins provided. Defensive research initiatives and the impact of emerging technologies in biology, chemistry and computer science are discussed.
