Abstract
The document presents the final report for the DIGEST Proof of Concept Prototype. It includes the findings and conclusions of the prototyping effort done during this project. Background and technical information on the prototype can be found in the System Design Document. The main objective of the Proof of Concept project was to test the feasibility of using the HHCODE datatype to support DIGEST data in a database server environment. A comprehensive data model was developed to support VMap level O data, with HHCODE extensions. The model was developed following a structured entity-relationship modeling approach. As it was developed using a repository-based data modeling tool, it is fully maintainable and can evolve as DND's requirements as well as the DIGEST standard and the various product specifications evolve. The main conclusion derived from the tests is that HHCODE is excellent at partitioning data in 2 dimensions, allowing scaleability to very large database and providing consistent access time to 2-dimensional HHCODE data. What was learned is that the approach of using a 4-dimensional HHCODE representation of line data is not efficient as a primary access method in large databases. Line features therefore need a coarse 2-dimensional HHCODE representation for primary access, which can be achieved through a tessellation process.
