DEVELOPMENT OF AN ACOUSTO-OPTIC CORRELATOR FOR THE DETECTION OF LPI SIGNALS

Abstract
In preparation for development of a 500MHZ signal-bandwidth acousto-optic (AO) correlator, for detection of LPI signals, two preliminary AO correlators, having identical architecture were designed, built and tested. Measurements on the two correlators have demonstrated: (a) the scaling laws that apply when a CCD-array detection of the correlation envelope is carried out; (b) the effect of Gaussian noise on the correlation envelope; (c) requirements imposed on the laser collimating and pre-detection optics, and (d) the noise immunity of the architecture.
