AN IMPROVED JOINT BLIND SYNCHRONIZATION ALGORITHM FOR M-PSK AND M-QAM SIGNALS

Abstract
The report presents the results of further studies to improve the performance of a previously developed joint blind synchronization algorithm for M-PSK and M-QAM modulated signals using DSP-based approaches. "Blind" in the above context implies that no a priori information is known about the signal or its structure other than: (a) the symbol rate; and (b) the modulation type being in either of the above two groups. The blind synchronization technique exploits the self-coherency of the received sampled data using a nearest neighbour type of search method whose objective is to minimize a certain cost function. The report describes two improvements that have been made to the algorithm. First, the previous restriction of an integer relationship between the baud rate and the sampling rate of the analog-to-digtial converter in the ESM receiver has been lifted, resulting in a somewhat more realistic situation. Second, the original search technique to find the optimum time and frequency synchronization instants has been preceded by a coarse two-dimensional search to provide the original search strategy with initial starting points. This enhancement has resulted in a very significant improvement in performance of the blind synchronization algorithm as attested to by the large reduction in the symbol error rate at the output of the demodulator.
