Abstract
Fatigue crack growth data was generated in a spin pit from cracks which propagated from tie bolt holes on three fifth stage compressor discs. Base line crack growth data using an idle-max-idle cycle may be compared to crack growth which was generated using the NAE J85-CAN-40 mission cycle. The conditions leading to crack nucleation and propagation at the tie bolt holes were investigated. Fretting fatigue and assembly induced damage were identified as probable mechanisms of crack nucleation.
