Abstract
The report addresses issues related to excitation of large membranes during modal testing. The more complex membrane considered is the one of the LADD Lens Test Article (LTA), which has dimensions of 8' by 20'. A review of conventional and some non-contact excitation techniques is presented. Definition of excitation requirements for large membrane structures, and LADD LTA in particular, is produced and is used to assess the reviewed excitation techniques. A general system design, including testing strategy, is made along with a number of options.
