- Abstract
- The design and construction of a radially segmented Terfenol-D drive rod for a barrel stave projector are described. The goal of the design was to reduce eddy current losses in the Terfenol while being cheaper to manufacture than a drive rod built using flat laminae. The Terfenol was machined using computer-controlled wire electric discharge machining (EDM). EDM machine parameters that optimized the cutting rate were found. Custom magnetic fixturing was developed to facilitate the machining. The radially segmented drive rod was used to build the MK IV Terfenol barrel stave projector, and its design and performance are described.
