Abstract
The report describes works performed toward the provision of a nonlinear dynamic analysis capability in the VAST finite element program. Following the finite element semi-discretization of the equations of motion, the Newmark Beta method was utilized for time integration. The corotational, updated Lagrangian formulation, previously adopted in VAST for nonlinear static analysis, was employed to linearize the equation and establish the iterative solution procedure. The proportional damping model was included. However, at the present stage of development, the global mass and damping matrices were assumed to be time invariant. Extensive numerical experimentation has been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the nonlinear transient responses of plates, shells, and beams subject to various step or impulsive loading conditions. For all the test cases and element types, the VAST predictions are in good agreement with the published solutions.
