Abstract
The report describes the results of the "Refractive Effects in the Visible and Infrared" working group created by the Marine Aerosol Properties and Thermal Imager Performance (MAPTIP) workshop in Oslo, Norway (May, 1994). The workshop was sponsored by RSG 8 of NATO's panel 4. After the introduction, the first part of the report provides a brief theoretical description of refractive effects in the marine boundary layer and of the two models, used in this study, to explain the experimental results. These two models are L(W)WKD from DREV (Canada) and PIRAM from DGA (France). The second section describes the experimental setups provided by DREV (Canada), DGA (France) and FGAN-FfO (Germany) and the two types of experiments that were performed. The third part gives a summary of all the data taken during the period of the trial and the fourth part provides the analysis done on a select set of the data. The last section discusses the results of this study and gives some general conclusions.
