Abstract
The Department of National Defence has provided schools for the children of military members in many locations in Canada were enrolement warranted it, and where provincial schools were not accessible. A formal evaluation of the domestic DND schools was conducted in 1986. This evaluation focused on the rationale for the continued jurisdication of schools by DND; the feasibility of returning administrative responsibility to the provinces where possible; and an assessment of the programmes in view of changing circumstances and conditions in the Canadian population (Holtzhauer et al., 1986). The Directorate of Social and Economic Analysis was asked to provide an assessment of the quality of education in these schools as part of the evaluation. As a result of the evaluation, a number of the DND schools were closed, others were transferred to provincial boards, and negotiations continue to take place with regard to other domestic DND schools.
