Abstract
The technical memorandum describes a validation study of SHIPMO7 AND PRECAL, two frequency domain codes for predicting ship motions and sea loads in waves. SHIPMO7 is a strip theory code while PRECAL is a three-dimensional panel code. Results from the two codes are compared with non-proprietary experimental data for a warship model. In general, SHIPMO7 gives good agreement with motions and sea loads, while PRECAL is slightly inferior. The consistently better results for SHIPMO7 in the lateral plane are likely due to its careful treatment of appendage and viscous forces. Neglecting rudder autopilot motions does not appear to influence significantly predictions from either code. A proposed approximate method for predicting sectional gyradii leads to satisfactory predictions of torsional moment.
