Abstract
The 1990, development was begun on an under-sea optical cable and associated cable deployment system under sponsorship of the Arctic Acoustics Group at Defence Research Establishment Pacific at CFB, Esquimalt, Victoria, BC. This program, known as Project SPINNAKER, culminated in the successful deployment, in April, 1996, of a 175 km cable on the sea-bed of the Arctic Ocean by Theseus, an unmanned submarine developed by ISE Research Ltd. of Port Coquitlam, BC, for this purpose. This technical memorandum discusses the development of the cable and cable deployment system, describes trials that were done, and documents the cable laying mission in the Arctic Ocean in 1996.
