Abstract
The study examined the theoretical performance of the M-out-of-N detection technique. The motivating example is the detection of sea skimming targets in combined rain and sea clutter. A mathematical representation of the problem in terms of the generalized binomial distribution was presented, which takes into account the general case of varying probabilities of detection for each of the N detection attempts. Bounds on the formulation in terms of the classical binomial distribution (arising from identical probabilities for each attempt) were also presented. Simplifying approximations for certain specific cases were found. Numerical computations for N=3,4,8 were performed in order to determine the optimum value for the threshold M. These results are included in this study, as are listings of the algorithms used.
