Abstract
As a class of vessel, submarines are used in a wide variety of applictions. The most familiar roles include: - covert attack of enemy shipping using torpedoes to isolate or blockade a given area. - a platform of strategic nuclear weapons. - hunter/killer of enemy submarines. - a platform for delivery of personnel and/or equipment into enemy territory to conduct covert operations. - seeking and destroying undersea explosive mines. These applications can be categorised into a number of distinct groups by means of size of vessel, whether manned or unmanned, by required operating depth and by mission profile (e.g. speed, manoeuvrability, payload, rate of dive/surfacing, fatigue life expectation).
