DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL HIGH-PERFORMANCE PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR APPLICATIONS IN SEVERE ENVIRONMENTS

Abstract
Cametoid Advanced Technologies Inc. is a member of a group of coating companies which specialise in the development and production of specification coatings for the aerospace, defense and other high-technology industrial sectors. Its research and development capablity in functional coatings was initially established in the mid-1980's focusing on conceptual and experimental development of inhomogeneous narrow-band optical filters. Subsequent research efforts have ben extended to other coatings for protective functions under severe service environments. Two examples of the ongoing development programs at Cametoid are (a) rare-earth element modified aluminide diffusion coatings for corrosion resistance at ambient and high temperatures, and (b) nitride coatings for erosion and wear resistance applications. While these two types of protective coatings are being primarily developed for aerospace uses, such as in gas turbine engines, they are finding significant spin-off applications in other market sectors. The fabrictaion processes employed for these coatings are based on ion assisted physical vapour deposition, one by electrical resistive heating with a subsequent heat treatment, and the other by electron beam reactive evaporation technique. Extensive characterization and test results on these experimental coatings have been generated and will be discussed.
