Abstract
The Personnel Operational Research TEAM (PORT) provides operational research and analysis assistance to both the Personnel Group and personnel managers working for the Environmental Chiefs of Staff (ECS). To perform mandated tasks PORT analysts require access to vast amounts of military personnel data. However, the transition of personnel information systems to "PeopleSoft", the reduction of support for legacy databases, and computer science support reductions have all affected PORT's ability to carry out its tasks. To address these concerns, and to take advantage of increasingly powerful desktop computer hardware and software, a strategic military personnel database has been designed for use by PORT analysts. The paper describes the development of this database. Four sample studies are briefly outlined to demonstrate the utility of the PORT database for both strategic and occupation-specific applications.
