Abstract
This document presents some concepts applicable to the development of a low-cost uncooled microbolometer IR camera. Standard bolometer read-out techniques are revisited and the difficulties encountered with them for reading large arrays of detectors are discussed. A microbolometer read-out concept is proposed. It allows for removing 99.9% of the detector DC offset while providing low-noise and high-level FPA output. A microbolometer sensor model implemented on an Excel spreadsheet is described and the results obtained from the simulation of a microbolometer FPA based on the proposed read-out scheme are presented. Finally, the preliminary design of a low-cost microbolometer camera based on analog video processing is discussed. The design includes the FPA read-out integrated circuit functions and the camera electronics.
