Abstract
This document provides a detailed description of the Chemical Agent Detection System (CADS II) as well as instructions for setting-up and using the system. CADS II provides real-time detection of mustard and nerve agents. It consists of a central control unit (CCU) and up to 8 remote land sensor stations (LSS). Each LSS operates with two chemical agent monitors (CAM), one in the mustard mode (H) and the other in the nerve agent mode (G). CAM readings from each LSS are relayed to the CCU by field telephone cables or by radio frequency linkage, up to a distance of 4 km. Each LSS operates from its own power supply (solar panel & battery) capable of 72 hours of operation in the absence of sunlight or from the CCU via power cables. The LSSs are arranged in order to provide a protective warning perimeter around a military installation. This allows personnel within the perimeter to operate in a more relaxed state (TOPP MEDIUM or TOPP LOW) knowing that the CADS II will provide them with sufficient warning to go to TOPP HIGH should a chemical warfare agent attack occur. The LSSs can be arranged in a variety of ways and more than one CADS II can be used to form a perimeter.
