Abstract
The report describes a cognitive task analysis (CTA) of combat team tasks during an Advance to Contact, with the primary objective to provide input to the development of the Tactical Battlefield Command System (TBCS) for the Canadian Land Forces. The CTA objectives were to establish the information requirements of key players within the Combat Team, estimate how these may impact on command and control (C2) effectiveness, provide information needs-related TBCS design requirements or constraints, and to outline major areas of cognitive demand to be addressed in system design. The CTA was limited to combat team command funtions for infantry and armour using existing standard operating procedures. Two interviewees guided thirteen Subject Matter Experts (SME's), with extensive comand experience, through the major elements of an advance to contact scenario. Each SME was asked to identify role-related information needs and strategies that would be needed to plan and conduct such an operation. SME's were also asked to consider their response to likely events such as enemy action. Interview data were tabulated by phase of the scenario and analysed in terms of four key topics relating to C2 effectiveness (Situation Awareness, Communication Effectiveness, Decision Support and Mental Workload) as well as to issues related to mission context and time pressure.
