Abstract
This document presents the test results after the construction of the remote controlled frequency agile silo beacon RF source (SBS) and the changes made since the design specification document was written. The 'silo' is located near Luskville, Quebec, and is 13.5 kilometers away from the Experimental Array Radar System (EARS) at the Area Five radar test site. One of two Portable Intference Frequency Sources (PIFS) was dismantled to supply the parts for the silo source. PIFS 1 is still intact and operational. The silo beacon source has the same functionality as the PIFS, including; RF output from 8.9 to 9.4 gigahertz, CW, noise or doppler modulation, doppler frequency from one to 7813 hertz. The following functions are remotely controlled via a spread spectrum RF modem link; RF on/off, RF frequency, modulation selection, doppler frequency, RF transmit signal amplitude. A personal computer at the Area Five site runs a control program to communicate with and control the silo source. The source can also be run in local testing mode using a portable terminal. Several key design modifications were implemented to convert the PIFS hardware for use as the SBS. A 24 VDC power supply was added to replace the two gell-cell batteries that powered the PIFS. The 'standby' and low voltage shutdown modes were eliminated. Two AC fans and a heater, all under thermostatic control have been added. The resident and control software was modified slightly.
