Abstract
This document describes the operation of the Exciter Unit. This is the unit which houses the frequency synthesizewrs and oscillators. The frequency generators are used for timing, local oscillators, calibration and transmitting signals within the EARS radar system. The unit can switch between local or remote control of the various functions to facilitate calibration or transmit modes of operation. The Exciter is the latest version of the system frequency source that have been used since the beginning of the project. This particular unit is the second in the line since the magnetron transmitters were replaced by a TWTA transmitter. It has the additional capability of selecting between internal or external X-band synthesizers. Also a YIG filter has been added to reduce the undesirable frequencies generated in the single side band modulation. The remote control of the internal Synthesizer has been added along with local control from a Test And Control Panel located on the side of the unit. All of options within the Exciter are controlled from this same panel.
