Abstract
The DREV Laser Cloud Mapper (LCM) has been used to obtain, in quasi real time, 3-dimensional measurements of the local extinction coefficients of screening smoke clouds. From these results, the transmission of the clouds along any given path can be calculated. A comparison between the calculated transmission values and the measurements performed with transmissometers along two different lines of sight indicated that the LCM predictions are valid and can provide a real time environmental map of a battlefield. In a second series of tests, the cloud mapping capabilities of a commerical portable eye-safe scanning lidar system have been compared with the much bulkier LCM. The results indicated that a field-portable eye-safe lidar system is achievable in the near future.
