Abstract
A number of tools have been developed or used by different directorates in the Department of Defence (DND) to support the application of human factors engineering (HFE). In order to plan the way ahead for future developments, a symposium was organized to present 17 HFE tools to actual and potential users in DND. Subsequently, a half-day workshop was held for the users to discuss their future requirements for such tools. This report includes the following: an overview of the project; an outline of the new DND Acquisition Cycle and Statement of Requirements; a summary of each of the 17 tools and where they fit in the acquisition cycle; summaries of related allied and COTS HFE and CAD tools; a summary of the outcomes of the users' workshop, and; recommendations for an integrated suite of HFE tools and for the development of specific tools.
