Abstract
This report describes contract work to upgrade the capabilities of the drop tower as the DREA Dockyard Laboratory (Pacific). There was a need for improved fracture data acquisition and analysis software. In addition elastic-plastic fracture measurements at impact velocities and low temperatures required improved transducer performance. The contract requirements included a review of high rate testing standards and developments in instrumentation and data acquisition, the development of customized software for routine data acqusition and display, and drop tower modifications to meet specified performance criteria. One of the main requirements was to identify and apply promising methods of measuring crack mouth opening and load line displacement, to increase manageable drop tower velocities for such tests from 2 m.s 1(-) to 5 m.s 1(-), and to improve the low temperature capability.
