Abstract
This research note examines key issues related to the Clinton Adminstraiton's Fiscal Year 1996 United States defence budget. Several categories of funding are explored, including operations and maintenance, procurement and ballistic missile defence. The major fault lines in the political debate are also highlighted, focussing on differing perceptions of readiness and modernization. Finally, the budget is evaluated within a broader context, in particular how effectively it supports US military requirements as outlined in the Bottom-Up Review.
