Calibration of the horizontal receive array of the Experimental Array Radar System

Abstract
Calibration coefficients have calculated for the horizontal receive array of the Experiment Array Radar System (EARS). These coefficients scale the power produced at the output of a receive channel to the power expected based on physical consideration. In total 96 coefficients have been calculated for the 8 antenna horns and their respective receive channels. Each horn/channel was calibrated for 12 transmitted waveforms corresponding to the different combinations of 6 frequencies and 2 pulse widths. The ethod of calibration is described using the example case of antenna horn 4 (receive channel 12), a transmitted frequency of 9.0 GHz, and a pulse width of 1.0 mu s. Calibrated data corresponding to this case were required to evaluate a high fidelity radar weather clutter simulation developed at the Defence Research Establishment Ottawa (DREO). The accuracy of the example calibration coefficient (1.79 x E2(-) ) was evaluated by comparing the reflectivity factor and rain rate derived from EARS measurements of precipitation with similar values derived from simultaneous measurements made by a Joss-Waldvogel disdrometer. The results of the comparison indicated that the horizontal receive array of EARS has been effectively calibrated.
