Abstract
In this paper the converison of sidescan sonar beam data into seabed reflectivity is posed as an inverse problem. The seabed reflectivity is discretized in terms of a basis set with unknown coefficients and values of these coefficients which yield the observed dta, possibly with constraints on the behaviour of the reflectivity function, are sought. In particular, when the sonar's beamset from consecutive pings overlap each other, htere is the possibility of improving the along-track resolution of the geocoded image over that of the nominal system beamwidth.
