Abstract
The Connaught Ranges and Primary Training Centre (CRPTC) is located on Department of National Defence (DND) property situated in the west end of Ottawa, Ontario. The CRPTC has a landfill site which could have within it's boundaries materiels such as Chemical Warfare Agents, (CWA) biological contaminants, laboratory hardware or explosive ordnance items. Anecdotal and historical information with respect to the landfill suggests that these materiels may be present. Comprehensive Environmental Assessments (EA), detailed Scopes of Work, Health and Safety plans (H&S) combined with a Field Technical Plan (FTP) were produced in support of Project CLEAR with Phase I of the project being specific to detailed intrusive investigations of four clearly delineated trenches located in the landfill; it is known, from a number of Geophysical Surveys (GS) that these trenches contain numerous metallic anomalies. DND has hired several contractors through Canadian Forces Support Unit Ottawa (CFSU) and Public Works to carry out detailed environmental studies and to identify potential impacts related to potential migration of contaminants from the landfill into Shirleys Bay.
