Abstract
This report describes a review of the U.S. Navy TADMUS Decision Support System (DSS) with respect to the goal and mental representation requirements of the Operations Room Officer (ORO) position of the HALIFAX class frigate. The review was conducted in a one-day session on February 12, 2001, using TADMUS DSS simulation software provided by DCIEM. The goal and mental representation frameworks were based on an analysis of results of a Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) for the ORO position by Matthews, Webb, and Bryant (1999). The goal of the review was to identify which dimensions of ORO mental representations and which ORO goals are supported by the U.S. Navy TADMUS DSS and which dimensions are not supported. The review indicated that the TADMUS DSS supported only some ORO goals and generally did not support as abstract a level of mental representation as needed by OROs.
