Abstract
The general theory and physical principles describing scintillation for a system with arbitrary source and receiver aperture diameters, weak to moderate saturation and small inner scale, are reviewed. Analytic approximations are proposed which describe the scintillation with an error not exceeding 35% of the exact value over a specified range of aperture diameters, inner scale and saturation. The analytic approximations are described as the product of two functions: the first represents the effect of nonzero source and receiver diameters in the weak staturation limit, and the other represents the effect of saturation.
