Comparisons of motions for HMCS NIPIGON with numerical predictions

Abstract
This report presents comparison between measured and predicted motions in waves for HMCS NIPIGON. The main objective of the study was to validate roll motion predictions, thus, trial runs selected for the present study are limited to bow quartering, beam, and stern quartering seas. Significant wave lengths are between 3 and 6 m, and all wave spectra have a dominant direction. Motion predictions from the time domain code FREDYN and the frequency domain codes SHIPMO7 and PRECAL are presented. FREDYN can only predict motions in long-crested seas; however, the ratio of SHIPMO7 predictions for short and long-crested seas provides a means for estimating motions from FREDYN in short-crested seas. All three programs give good agrement with measured heave and pitch motions. For roll motions, SHIPMO7 gives good agreement while FREDYN gives fair agreement. The poor agreement of PRECAL roll predictions is likely due to the accidental absence of bilge keel damping in Version 4 of the code.
