Abstract
The existence of millions of anti-personnel mines in various countries around the world constitutes an indiscriminate threat and a significant global concern. The United Nations (UN) has acknowledged the problem and has sponsored efforts to respond to issues such as mine detection, mapping, clearance and disposal. At the same time, the UN has tried to mitigate some of the social and medical consequences of mine injuries by supporting humanitarian efforts. Canada has adopted a leadership role in the mine action field by establishing the Canadian Centre for Mine Action Technologies (CCMAT). This organization supports fundamental scientific research and the development of innovative demining technologies. Such an entity serves to address the lack of rigorous scientific knowledge that is known to characterize the demining field. The demining community agrees that this knowledge gap must be bridged as a first step in developing the tools that will be needed to address the magnitude of the existing eradication problem. The present work was designed to examine the effects of surrogate mine blasts in representative soils, in keeping with the goal of supporting fundamental research. One purpose of the study was to establish a database of blast effects, both in air and in soil, that would be representative of those associated with known anti-personnel mines. TRUNCATED
