Abstract
Public key cryptography is widely used nowadays for electronic data protection. From one particular technique to another, the level of security provided and the efficiency of a practical application may vary greatly. Some methods offer clear advantages over others in particular circumstances. The objective of this document is to describe the current state of the main public key techniques used today. Those techniques include the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) system and the elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). We will start with a short reminder of the RSA technique. Then, we will conduct a comparison of the security offered by the three main public key cryptosystems. We will finish by an analysis of the efficiency of those systems with respect to their bandwith and storage needs and their speed performance.
