Abstract
The performance of the steered, minimum-variance, subarray beamformer is examined in some detail. It is demonstrated that improved performance is possible through the use of a randomised subarray geometry. It is also demonstrated that the beamformer is susceptible to multipath problems in both the narrowband and wideband modes. A series of simulation experiments allows its performance to be evaluated against that of other adaptive and non-adaptive beamformers.
