RANS Calculations of the Evolution of Vortices

Abstract
The evolution of a laminar vortex was calculated using the Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes solvers TRANSOM and CFX-TASCflow. Calculations were done on grids of varying density and were compared to an approximate solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. Both solvers generated accurate predictions for this flow. The solutions were used to make recommendations for the grid density required for accurate predictions of the pressure in the core as the vortex evolves over hundreds of core diameters. TRANSOM was also used to determine the effect of grid density on a turbulent vortex, though in this case there is no analytic solution for comparison.
