Analyzing Ship Wakes in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images Development of the "RedBox" Application

Abstract
This report summarizes the development of an application for analyzing ships and ship wakes found in satellite SAR imagery. The need for such an application is identified and a previously developed prototype application is examined briefly. The new application, known as RedBox, offers semi-automated ship wake detection. Ship wakes are detected by identifying significant line-tendencies in the SAR image with the help of a Radon transformation. Image processing techniques such as high-pass filtering using the Fast Fourier Transform are available to enhance the detection process. Current shortcomings of the application are mentioned and future plans for development are discussed. Relevant C++ source code is included for image processing and transformation algorithms.
