Abstract
This document describes a study that was made into the possible synergisms that can happen when a horizon search radar and an infrared search and track (IRST) system are used simultaneously under various meteorological conditions. The first part of the document introduces the subject and develops a model to describe four different operational possibilities that depend on the air-sea temperature difference (ASTD = Tair - Tsea), and the air-sea vapour pressure differences (ASVPD = eair - esea). The second part shows the possible synergistic conditions that may have occurred during trials, in both North America and Europe, at which DRDC Valcartier has participated over the last 13 years and for which th epertinent meteorological data is available. Finally, the last section provides some discussion of the results of this analysis, their operational ramifications and other consequences.
