In this report, we present an overview of CommonKADS, a knowledge modeling method that leads to the design of a knowledge based system (KBS). The organization, task, and agent models are described briefly while more emphasis is put on the knowledge model. We show how to construct a knowledge model using an example of the Search and Rescue domain: Information gathering for the communications search. Also, we propose a new Problem Solving Method (PSM) that we have developed in order to model the planning of information gathering tasks. In order to illustrate how the PSM may be used, we present a brief overview of ASISA, a KBS that we developed and in which we implemented this PSM. We developed ASISA in order to assist controllers in the Joint Rescue Coordination Centers with their information gathering task. The targeted audience for this report is the scientific and engineering community concerned with developing decision support systems.
