Abstract
The Virtual Combat Systems (VCS) Group at Defence Research and Development Canada – Atlantic (DRDC Atlantic) is involved in maritime combat systems virtual experimentation programs in both national and international capacities. The group has a mandate to develop a virtual environment (VE)-based experimentation capability at DRDC Atlantic and to support the Canadian Forces (CF) in developing the experimentation capabilities required to support capability-based planning and Concept Development and Experimentation (CD&E). To progress this mandate the group is building an experimental infrastructure using the High Level Architecture (HLA)-based Virtual Maritime Systems Architecture (VMSA) provided by the Defence Science and Technology Organization (DSTO). The VCS Group’s experimentation facility is intended as a resource for other research scientists, and has already been used for an initial Virtual Battle Experiment (VBE) that investigated coalition sharing of broadband passive sonar tracks at a primitive level. This experiment was of a rigorous nature, where multiple subjects were run through various scenarios to obtain statistically relevant results. In addition, the group is involved with The Technical Cooperation Program, Maritime Systems Group Technical Panel 1 (TTCP MAR TP-1) in the planning and execution of multinational VBEs. These primarily discovery experiments provide a venue to explore issues of distributed Command and Control (C2) experimentation of coalition op
