Abstract
Gas-backed flextensional sonar projectors achieve their low frequency performance by utilizing a mechanical transformation of linear motor motion to radial projector surface motion. Due to the mechanical transformation ratio, hydrostatic loads alter the performance of these projectors to varying degrees and are directly related to projector geometry. By measuring the accumulated charge on the piezoceramic drive motor as a function of hydrostatic load; an accurate evaluation of the quasi-static mechanical transformation ratio can be deduced.
