Abstract
A physical optics formulation which is better suited to near-field computations is presented; it differs from standard formulations in relying on a locally expanded phase approximation in the radiation integral in conjunction with surface partitioning. The proposed methodology is shown to be more general than the standard one at virtually no extra computational cost and its potential advantages are convincingly demonstrated. To better assess some of the limitations of standard formulations, a comprehensive treatment discussing observation range restrictions, radiating regions, phase approximations as well as physical optics is provided.
