Operating Characteristics of the Wideband FFT Filter Bank J-out-of-L CFAR Detector

Abstract
This report presents new results on the theoretical performance of the wideband FFT filter bank J-out-of-L CFAR detector. The probability of false alarm P sub fa and the probability of detection P sub d for the J-out-of-L detector are evaluated using the assumption that the received signal is a single pure tone embedded in additive white Gaussian noise. For different signal-to-noise ratios, the probability of detection P sub d is plotted as a function of the probability of false alarm P sub fa and the resulting ROC curves show that, for any fixed L larger than or equal to 2, the best J-out-of-L detector is the (floor (L/2)+1)-out-of-L detector, which is referred to as the L-block majority detector in this report. Here the notation (floor (x)) denotes the largest integer less than or equal to x. The performance of the L-block summation and majority detectors is then compared and analyzed. It is found that, relative to the L-block summation detector, the L-block majority detector incurs a maximum performance loss of about 1 dB.
