Abstract
The results of a technology demonstration study are presented for the Defence Research & Development Canada (DRDC) Toronto’s Human Modelling Group. This report describes a method and system for integrating laser scanner and digital photogrammetry data. It proposes and demonstrates an integrated solution using a Cyrax laser scanner, Olympus 5050 Digital Camera, PhotoModeler Software, and Innovmetric Polyworks software. The proposed system enables digital photogrammetry to be used to: augment and back up laser scanning coverage, add detailed local coverage to a larger global model, provide semi-automated photo texturing of three-dimensional (3D) models (reducing polygon counts in some cases), reduce the required laser scanning grid size for some objects, and extract features or dimensions from previously archived images. This study found that cm level accuracy can be obtained from photogrammetry of large objects (as shown in the pilot project by measuring two sides of the DRDC Toronto building). Recommendations are made for implementing this technology, especially by replacing existing digital photography of scanned objects by photogrammetry compatible imaging. The combined system offers numerous advantages over either technique separately including improved data collection efficiency, improved visualization, and the ability to extract dimensions from digital images.
