Abstract
The definition and measurement of the complexity of visual forms and visual arrays is reviewed, starting with the contributions of gestalt psychology at the beginning of the twentieth century and ending with current research in algorithmic information theory, perceptual learning theory, and neural circuit theory. Complexity and probability are shown to be linked through their reciprocal relationship as developed in algorithmic information theory, which is shown in turn to be consistent with important aspects of perceptual learning theory and neural circuit theory. The emphasis is on applications to visual displays.
