Abstract
Five experiments studied the relationship between compressed file size and search performance for visual displays. Experiments 1 and 2 were visual search tasks where observers searched displays to find either a triangle or a parallelogram randomly positioned on the display. In experiment 1 the displays were marine electronic charts, radars, or chart-radar overlays. In experiment 2 they were colour photographs of the earth. In both experiments, search decision time, rated complexity, and proportion of decision errors were monotonically related to the log JPEG compressed file size (LJPG) of the displays. Experiments 3 looked at two different same-different decision tasks in which a marine chart display was followed by a marine radar display. The task was to decide whether they represented the same or a different area. The ad lib condition gave unlimited viewing time while the fast condition gave a short viewing time for each display. Chart viewing time in the ad lib condition was a positive increasing function of chart LJPG. In the fast condition, decision accuracy depended on chart and radar LJPG and the subjective similarity between chart and radar pairs. Displays in the search tasks of experiments 4 and 5 presented groups of chart symbols containing either triangles or parallelograms as targets and other symbols as background.
