Micronavigation of the Klein 5500 Sidescan Sonar Using Inter-Ping Beam Correlations

Abstract
In this report, the cross correlation between the beams of sidescan sonar data from consecutive pings is investigated. The along-track and across-track shifts which maximize this cross-correlation yield high resolution estimates of the along-track motion and the sway of the towfish. The difference of the estimates for the port and starboard sides can be used to estimate the towfish heading change. This technique is examined using data from the DRDC Atlantic Klein 5500 sidescan sonar and it is shown that the estimates, which are obtained in this manner, are consistent with direct sensor measurements of the towfish heading and pitch.
